Dented Cans, GE Foods, and Irradiated Foods...
What GREEDY MERCHANTS
Don't Want You to Know!

Have you heard about irradiated foods... genetically engineered foods...? Ever wonder whether buying dented cans is safe...?

Unfortunately the commercial world is not about your health. So, you should probably take claims they make with a grain of salt. That's why we're still going...

The Alkaline Newsletter Email is all about bringing you the latest, relevant health tips and research to help you make smartER eating choices. And, it's amazing what we have accidentally uncovered during our latest research...

Perhaps you've wondered whether dented cans are safe... you know those bargain deals you get at the supermarket? Hmm... you don't get those in your area? Well, you need to know this important fact anyway.

Here's what our research shows: You should AVOID ALL DENTED CANS. That's it. Pretty simple. I think, you should avoid can foods in all, but if you are ever forced to eat can food, make sure it is scratch-free, dent-free, and even more important, there are no leaks of any sort. OK, you've been warned.

You see, all cans have a lacquered inside surface. That surface can be damaged by denting. Now, it's not only the actual lacquer that can cause a health risk. But, when that lacquer peels off food may come into contact with metal, causing tainting.

That's the good news. The bad news is that if the seals are damaged they can let air and bacteria inside the can. Now, you don't know how long that "crippled" can has been sitting there on the shelf. So, don't buy it, and if you happen to buy it then take it back and ask for a refund.

Now, we couldn't believe what we discovered about irradiated foods...

Should you worry about irradiated food? YES. Generally the process is used to prolong shelf life or to kill insects, moulds, bacteria and other potentially harmful micro-organisms. Sounds good so far... what's interesting is that irradiated foods have been exposed to a radioactive source.

This is similar to having a medical X-ray. Funny thin is that food people say it's not bad for you. I know what you're thinking... But, the food has been bathed in radioactive waves!" So, how can it be good for you? Good point.
While we don't know (yet) how irradiation affects long-term health, it is a well known fact that irradiation affects the flavour, texture and nutritional value of the product.

Of course, there is also the other side of the coin. The process of irradiation reduces the need for preservatives, and it kills bacteria, insects and moulds. So, I guess, that's a good thing.

Interesting point, the Food Standards website states this about the irradiation process (watch the underlined words): "Food can only be irradiated if there is no other safe method available. Any irradiated food must go through a strict safety assessment by Food Standards Australia New Zealand and, if approved, must be labeled as having been treated by radiation."

Well, I guess you need to draw your own conclusions.

The good thing is that to date, in Australia and New Zealand, only herbs and spices, herbal teas and some tropical fruits have been approved to be irradiated.  So, if irradiated food gives you the shakes, stay away from those products. Unfortunately, irradiated foods are more common in the U.S. and UK.

That brings us onto the next point that's even more interesting...

Genetic Engineering - the other side of the story!

First, what it is... Apparently, gene technology uses recombinant DNA techniques to alter the heritable genetic material of living cells or organisms. This technology allows an organism to be altered in a specific and directed way.

Put simply, Genetic Engineering is the manipulation of animal or plant genes. Not sure about you, but the word "manipulation" makes me a little uneasy about that.  In my experience, when humans start manipulating nature, the end result is, well... not fantastic to put it mildly.

So how can one eat healthy in today's crazy times of mass production, food irradiation, and ungodly food manipulation?

One, is to keep your eyes open. Read the labels and understand where your food came from. Two, keep reading our weekly updates, packed with important tips that could improve your health and even save your life. Three, change your diet. Healthy eating can be easy, affordable and a lot of fun IF you have a system that works - like The Alkaline Cookbook.
