Dear friend, Did you know that eating too little protein or calcium may results in a weak musculoskeletal system? Your musculoskeletal system allows you to dance to your favourite music, push the gas pedal in the car, and sprint to safety when your life is in danger. The musculoskeletal system needs regular strength exercise and good diet to stay in top shape. However, many people don't realise that from their twenties they begin to lose muscle tissue and bone... Sarcopenia - The CRIPPLING KILLER! What is 'Sarcopenia'? It's the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength and function due to aging and it starts pretty early... Research shows that after the age of 25 you will experience a 0.5-1% muscle loss per year - every year! That may seem like little, however, after just ten years that loss can be enormous. So much so that in the U.S. alone a whopping 45% of people over age 60 suffer from sarcopenia or muscle loss. This avoidable disease is associated with increased broken bones, falls and sports injuries among older people. Remember, it all starts in your twenties... and, as you know, prevention is better than cure. Protect Yourself Before Staying active and doing strength-training exercises is the best way for maintaining muscle mass, strength and mobility. I train 5 times each week and up to two times every day when close to competitions. Of course, not everyone wants to win bodybuilding contests or look ripped and bulky. However, moderate exercise, three times a week seem to be just fine for most people. The key is to be regular, don't quit. What's also important is getting plenty of high-quality protein. Watching your protein intake is especially important if you are a vegetarian or eat meat only on special occasions. We're not saying here you need to double up on your burgers and chicken schnitzels. What we are saying is that you need to make sure you get enough protein in your diet especially since low protein intake contributes to muscle loss. How much protein you need depends on your age and lifestyle. However, about 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight is enough for most people. Don't go to the other extreme where you consume tonnes of protein! Too much protein can turn your body acidic. So, you need to be balanced. Stay Away From 'Lazy' Protein! Unfortunately, as you get older the muscle tissue absorbs less of the protein that you eat. So, what's important is not just how much protein you consume but how much your body is able to digest and assimilate. While tuna fish, turkey breast and chicken breast are rich in protein, you might want to consider proteins that come from non-animal sources... We believe that plant-based protein are superior to animal protein and chemical produced protein powders. That's why we recommend Alkaline Super Foods - it's a natural source of highly digestible protein.
