Do you suffer from mild bloating, nausea and energy dips or mood swings right after eating...? Dear friend, Food allergies cause roughly 30,000 emergency room visits and 100 to 200 deaths per year in the United States! The symptoms of a food allergy are the result of the immune system providing a defence – histamine - against something you have been eating or drinking. Some symptoms involve the swelling of the lips or tongue, stomach pain, bowel irritation, hives (rash), or asthma. Most people don’t realise that food allergy and food intolerance are two different things... The book, The Sensitive Gut answers: “Genuine allergic reactions . . . occur within minutes of ingesting an offending food. Symptoms that arise more than an hour later most likely indicate intolerance.” Intolerances are triggered by food chemicals - natural or artificial - which cause reactions by irritating the nerve endings in different parts of the body. Some children get a rash if they eat strawberries, oranges or tomatoes. If you consume too much of one particular substance, it can accumulate in your body and cause a reaction. Some people think that chocolate gives them a reaction. What they don’t realise is that oranges, bananas, beer, wine, fish, tomatoes and cheese, ALL contain the same natural chemical (amine) that chocolate does. So if a particular food gives you a reaction, just stop for a moment and think about what you had for breakfast, lunch or dinner the day before. Food intolerance is hard to identify as there could be many causes. For some people avoiding foods that are rich in natural chemicals like, tomatoes, kiwifruit, oranges, grapes, meats, dairy foods, nuts and even chewing gum, could provide the relief they’re looking for. The best way is to simply go by process of elimination. You simply take away a particular food from your diet and watch what happens. Don't do this alone; you should always seek help from a qualified dietician. Of course, there are many dieticians out there. What you need to make sure is that they specialise in the area you need help with the most – perhaps, food intolerance. Our high-paced, caffeine and sugar-powered lifestyles overburdens our bodies with an excessive acid load making our bodies feel tired, worn-out and prone to food allergies and food sensitivities. The toxins produced within an overly-acidic, oxygen deprived body may contribute radically towards runny noses, sneezing, itching and tearing of the eyes, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, skin rash and other allergic reactions. Allergic or sensitivity reactions can often be contained very quickly by alkalizing your body. Eating alkaline-rich foods regularly, will help you to reduce inflammation, boost your immunity and bullet-proof your body against allergies and food sensitivities. If your goal is to feel healthy and energized, I recommend you check out the Alkaline Cook Book. Simply because it has a 4 WEEK PLAN that covers ALL your meals making it easy for you to eat healthy! P. S. Oftentimes what triggers food intolerance are artificial chemicals – preservatives, colourings and flavourings. So make sure you know your labels. For example, most red wine contains preservative 220, chewing gum contains artificial emulsifiers, colours and sweeteners. Before you buy any food at your local supermarket always read the label. Don’t get paranoid about it but if there is a heap of numbers like 220, 228, 102, 110, 280, E? and so on, maybe you should look for something else. Talk to you next week!
