It makes sense to 'scan' your body, so to speak, on a regular basis to ensure that you're fit and healthy, disease-free, and on the right track.
Time for a check-up? Well, as you know prevention is better than cure. Sticking your head in the sand hoping that your health is just fine is probably not a sensible option.
That's why today we want to share with you 7 important 'health checks' you should look into if you want to enjoy vibrant good health today and in the future...
Health TEST #1: Liver
Your liver is an extremely diligent and important worker. It processes nutrients, detoxifies harmful substances, and filters and cleanses the blood. It also regulates the level of sugars in your blood and manufactures bile which is needed by your stomach to break down fat. Eating highly processed and refined foods or leading a busy stressful lifestyle can put tremendous pressure on this vital organ. But your liver is not a whinger and it won't complain until it needs serious help - but, by then it could be too late! You can get your liver tested with a liver function test (LFT). It's a blood test that not only will check a number of things like your liver's health, fitness level and wellbeing. However, some say the blood test method is not always accurate. You may want to consider magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based method which was developed by Professor St Pierre, of the Biomagnetics Group. Apparently this method is non-invasive, pain free, and more effective.
Health TEST #2: Gut
Also called leaky gut or Intestinal Permeability test. If you have a leaky gut then partially digested food or bacterial toxins will cross into the blood stream and pollute and poison your system. That can lead to allergies, systemic disease and immune system problems. Intestinal permeability test helps to assess your digestive health by analysing urine for the clearance of two sugars, lactulose and mannitol. Using this test your doctor should be able to determine how well the small intestine absorbs vital nutrients and whether it sufficiently discriminates against harmful substances.
Health TEST #3: Food Sensitivities & Allergies.
Common food allergens are eggs, wheat, dairy, peanuts, soy and shellfish. However, identifying food sensitivities is not that simple as your 'reactions' may be masked by other symptoms, or take some time to appear. For example right now you might be reacting to some food you ate several days ago. There are many methods of testing for food allergies. Your naturopath should be able to tell you whether you have allergies to different foods, chemicals, artificial colourings, or flavourings and preservatives.
Health TEST #4: pH
To maintain good health the body is constantly seeking to get rid of the excess acids that irritate the tissues and deplete them of minerals. One of the principal systems it uses for this purpose is the renal system (kidneys). The normal rate of acid excretion through the kidneys gives urine a pH that falls between 6.75 and 7.25. By testing the degree of acidity of the urine, you can determine whether your body is eliminating a normal quantity of acids. If the acid excretion rate is higher than normal, the urinary pH will be more acidic. Health TEST #5: Blood Sugar Level (BSL)
Health experts agree that your resting blood sugar (glucose) level should be below 6.1mmol/L (110mg/dL) to keep your health out of danger. Health TEST #6: Parasites
The word 'parasite' translates "an organism that lives on or in an organism of another species, known as the host, from the body of which it obtains nutriment." That's what parasites do in your body. They steal your food. They even eat your tissues! You can get parasites from food, water and pets. If you struggle to loose weight or gain weight it could be because of those tiny little devils that are invisible to the human eye. There are many ways to test yourself for parasites. One is a stool test (home stool test kit) that you can take at home and send it to a lab for examination. There is also an antigen test and blood antibody test which may indicate a past or a chronic infection but is not used to detect a current infection. If you feel tired often, get frequent allergies, have trouble sleeping, and grind your teeth at night - a parasitic infection could be the problem!
Health TEST #7: Nutrient Status
Are you getting the nutrients you need? A balanced diet is important for optimal health. Still even if you eat all the best foods and supplement your diet with a multivitamin each day you may still be deficient in some key nutrients. A vitamin and mineral deficiency test will pinpoint those vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential micronutrients that are lacking in your diet. Now, many traditional tests are influenced by recent dietary fluctuations - in other words they are not always accurate. You may want to do some research on Spectracell Micronutrient Test which, experts claim, is more effective because it measures the intracellular amounts of selected nutrients within your lymphocyte white blood cells, thus giving you a more complete and accurate picture.
