Dear friend, Did you know that vegans on average weigh less than meat lovers? It's true. Vegans also have lower rates of heart disease and diabetes. Going vegetarian is also great for those poor animals. When you think how those animals are raised, bread, slaughtered, processed or transported then no wonder many make the switch to a vegan diet! Of course the masses believe that they must eat meat, dairy and eggs to stay healthy and to get the protein, iron and calcium needed for optimal health. However, many health experts disagree... You can get plenty of protein and calcium with a plant-based diet. And a vegetarian diet is healthier, too. The author of The Flexitarian Diet, Dawn Jackson Blatner, says that every chronic disease risk can be decreased with a plant-based, vegan diet. T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., spent decades doing laboratory and field research into the dietary causes of cancer. He observed that "in the lab, we could literally turn cancer cells on and off by adjusting the level of animal protein in the diet." Journal of the American Dietetic Association published an article saying "Appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases." How to Be a Healthy Vegan? To make your vegan diet work it needs to be 'appropriately planned...' You can't just go off meat and expect life to be super healthy. Many vegans struggle to get all the nutrients they need. They look skinny, famished and undernourished - definitively not healthy! Many health experts claim that many vegetarians are likely to be deficient in critical nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, zinc, calcium and omega-3s. It was once believed that you could get B12 from veggies. However, more recent research suggests that the active form (the one that gets assimilated by your body) of vitamin B12 is only found in animal products. So, if you're a vegan it's very likely that you're not getting enough B12 from your diet. If you eat no meat at all then perhaps you should consider taking vitamin B12 to increase intake. You should also include calcium-fortified soy products and tofu, almonds, and dark-green leafy vegetables to get the calcium you need. Fish oil, flaxseed oil, walnuts and canola oil are all great sources for omega-3s. Legumes, nuts and soy products are also rich source of protein.
