The Alkaline Cook Book

Dear friend,

Spirulina is praised as the ultimate super food by many.

This nutrient-dense plant plankton provides a concentrated source of protein containing all the amino acids, and many beneficial vitamins and nutrients.

Since it's available in capsules, tablets, powder, flakes and extract from, Spirulina is not only high on nutrients but, thanks to modern science, it's also easy and convenient to take and consume.

As a concentrated whole food Spirulina seems to pose no dangers when taken in the recommended dosage. However, as in most dietary supplements, taking exceedingly large doses (and even 'normal doses' for some people) can cause unwanted "spirulina side effects"...

The side effects that you should know about.

It's believed that because of its high nucleic acid content, the consumption of this super food can give you increased levels of uric acid, which can consequently cause kidney problems. Also, due to the high content of vitamins and minerals, impaired liver function might also occur.

Some people have noticed the following annoying side effects:

  • Upset stomach, feeling a bit sick, hiccups, mild diarrhoea.
  • Nausea and constipation.
  • Headaches.
  • Feeling dizzy and low on energy especially if you suffer from hypoglycaemia and anaemia.
  • As a concentrated protein food it could increase body temperature.
  • Smelly perspiration.
  • It may cause insomnia in some people particularly if you consume it just before bedtime.

Also, Spirulina contains phenylalanine, which should be avoided by people who have the metabolic disorder phenylketonuria, where the body cannot metabolize this amino acid, which apparently might build up in the brain and impair its function.

The other thing worth mentioning is that Spirulina, if not properly grown, cultivated or harvested, may accumulate heavy metals from contaminated water, and increase the body's load of lead, mercury, and even cadmium.
[ - Accumulation of mercury and other elements by spirulina (cyanophyceae). -- Johnson PE and Shubert LE. -- Nutr Rep Intl 1986;34(6):1063-71.]

One study has found samples of Spirulina to be contaminated with animal hairs and insect fragments.
[- Nakashima MJ, Angold S, Beavin BB, et al.-- Extraction of light filth from spirulina powders and tablets: collaborative study. -- J Assoc Off Anal Chem 1989;72:451-53.]

That's why it's recommended that you buy your Spirulina from a reputable and trustworthy producer and make sure that the 'certified organic' type is truly and indeed certified organic.

So, are we saying that Spirulina is a lot of 'hype'
and it's dangerous for you?

Of course not. However, you should know that many of those Spirulina 'upbeat claims' are based on research done on individual nutrients that it contains rather than on direct research using the plant itself.

Also because Spirulina is so nutrient-dense it may be a little bit overwhelming for some people.

As with any dietary supplements, if you have any health condition or concern on the use of Spirulina powder, you should consult with your physician before consumption. And seek emergency medical attention if you notice any adverse reactions.

Alkaline SuperFoods contains no Spirulina. Surely Spirulina is more 'nutrient dense' than Barley Grass, Wheatgrass or Alfalfa. But we believe that Alfalfa, Wheatgrass and Barley Grass are 'easier' on the body and will alkalise it faster.

As soon as science proves us otherwise you can rest assured that we will include Spirulina in Alkaline SuperFoods.

Some mix Spirulina with juice or a smoothie because they can't stand the taste of raw Spirulina. But that defeats the purpose behind drinking Spirulina since even the healthiest home-made juices are still high in sugar which makes your body acidic.

The Ultimate Superfoods
without the foul taste or smell!

Those health-conscious individuals who can't stand the foul and awkward taste of Spirulina should love the mild, pleasant and 'taste-bud-friendly' taste of Alkaline SuperFoods. It's filled with healthy goodness you can enjoy anytime and anywhere without coating your mouth with yucky muck.
