Dear friend, Why is it that we can get along with some people but not with others? You may, for example, struggle to get along with your boss, co-workers, neighbour or in-laws... truth is that we just don't click with some people no matter how much we try! The same can be true with the foods you eat... Some foods just don't click "chemistry-wise". For example, your teeth start the digestive process by breaking down the food and mixing it with the enzymes in your mouth. However, starches require different enzymes for digestion, and are digested faster than proteins, and fats inhibit the digestion of protein. Mix all of them together and you will stress and overwhelm the digestive system... and cause various kinds of digestive disorders! Digestive Chemistry 101 You need to carefully combine the foods you eat. Simply because different foods are digested and handled by your digestive tract differently... Accordingly to Dr. Herbert M. Shelton:
If you eat a starch with a protein, digestion is impaired and food leaves your stomach undigested or partly digested. Undigested food will start to ferment, decompose and poison your organism. That's why it's necessary you understand how to combine foods for maximum digestion, energy and wellbeing. Simply follow the following rules... Don't Forget: You should drink before or after your meals; never with solid food. Some people just have to have a glass of juice, water or even cola with their food. They can't imagine eating without their drink. Yet, you need to understand that when you chew your food your body begins releasing enzymes. Those enzymes bond with food and aid in digestion. Have a glass of water or juice and you will simply wash those enzymes away and make food almost impossible to be digested. For that reason, you should only drink half an hour before meals and 1-2 hours after meals. Don't Mix Concentrated Proteins Concentrated proteins like fish, nuts, seeds and soy beans should not be eaten with concentrated carbohydrates like breads, cereals, grains, lentils, potatoes, pumpkin, etc. Apparently women are great at multi-tasking (go ladies!) but that's not the case with your stomach. It can only focus on one thing at a time (just the way guys do!). Both protein and carbs require different enzymes for digestion. Don't take this rule to a painful extreme where you spend inordinate amounts of time to separate foods that contains small amounts of both either. You need to also enjoy your food! Fats and Proteins Don't Mix Unless... Protein gets a little shy in the presence of fats and it won't get properly digested. Having fish or seeds with vegetable oils or avocado is not recommended unless you eat a mixed vegetable salad to aid digestion. Never Mix Fruits with Any Meal! Fruits are mostly digested in your intestines - not your stomach like other foods. If you start munching on those juicy grapes to compliment your bowl of lasagne then the fruit will inhibit digestion. Plus, fruits ferment and acidify your body! There are four categories of fruit:
Sweet fruits like bananas, dates, fig and mango should always be eaten last (after other fruits) because they take longer to digest. Melon fruits like rock melon or honey melon should be eaten separately because they require different enzymes for digestion. Acid fruits are less "fussy" but still require different digestive enzymes to be assimilated by your body so they should also be eaten alone. Don't Forget the 80/20 Rule! Your stomach, liver and intestines prefer foods like broccoli, asparagus, cucumber, celery, spinach and zucchini because are nutritious, cleansing, energising, easy to digest and alkalising.
